Number your invoices with series
A series gives your invoices a prefix and a next number. Skileo fills in the number of each new invoice and moves the series on when you save it.

How numbering works
Every invoice needs a number. A series holds a prefix, such as INV, and the next number. When you create an invoice, Skileo fills in the prefix and the next number of the series. When you save the invoice, the series moves on to the number after it.
Credit notes can have their own series. Without one, they use the invoice series.
Add a series
- Open Settings, Invoice series.
- Click Add new.
- Fill in the Series name, the Series prefix (up to 16 characters) and the number to start from, in Next in series at.
- In Available for document type, choose whether the series is for invoices or for credit notes.
- Click Save.
Each series shows its prefix and its next number in the list.
Choose the series of an invoice
- With one invoice series, Skileo fills in its prefix and next number by itself.
- With two or more, the invoice form shows Document series. Choose a series: its prefix and next number fill in.
Under the number, the form shows the next number of the series. See Create a sales invoice.
When the series moves on
- When you save an invoice, the series moves to the number after it. This happens only when the number ends with digits and is equal to or higher than the next number of the series.
- A lower number, typed by hand, leaves the series as it is. The series never goes back.
- Drafts don’t move the series. The drafts Skileo makes for repeating invoices have no number: you give them one when you open and save them.
- A copy of an invoice takes the next number of the series.
- Invoices added from a CSV file don’t move the series.
Change or delete a series
Use the edit and delete buttons on the line of the series.
- Two series can’t have the same prefix.
- The next number must be higher than the last number already used with this prefix.
- The default series of Skileo, without a prefix, can’t be changed or deleted.
Common questions
Can I type the number myself?
Yes. The number is a field you can change, up to 31 characters. If it ends with a number higher than the next number of the series, the series continues after it.
Why doesn't the invoice form show {ui:invoices.edit.field.documentSeries}?
You have only one invoice series. The field shows when you have two or more.
Why can't I lower the next number?
Your invoices already use the numbers up to the last one issued with this prefix. The next number must be higher than that one.
Who can change the series?
The Business owner, and each Member with Invoicing set to Write. With Read, a Member sees the series but can’t change them.
