# Record a payment on an invoice

Choose Record payment in the invoice's menu, type the amount, the date and the payment method, then click Record payment. Once paid, an invoice can't be changed.

## Record a payment

1. Open “Finances” › “Sales invoices” in the menu.
2. Click the actions button (**⋮**) at the end of the invoice's line and choose “Record payment”. On the invoice page, click “Record payment”.
3. Fill in the payment:
   - “Payment amount”: Skileo fills in what is still due. Type a smaller amount for a part payment.
   - “Payment date”: today at first.
   - “Payment method”: how the client paid.
   - “Payment note”: optional.
4. Click “Record payment”.

At the top, Skileo shows what will remain due after this payment. If you type more than is due, Skileo warns you, but you can still record it.

On an invoice that is “Not paid”, Skileo first reminds you that you won't be able to delete the invoice after the payment. Click “Record!” to go on.

The invoice turns “Partially paid” or “Paid”. See [What invoice statuses mean](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/invoice-statuses).

## Mark several invoices as paid

1. In the list, tick the invoices.
2. Choose “Mark as paid” at the top.
3. Confirm.

Each invoice gets one payment of what is still due, dated today, with Bank as the method. Invoices with nothing due are left as they are.

Drafts and void invoices can't be marked as paid. If your selection holds one, Skileo marks none: untick it and try again.

To undo, delete the payment of each invoice, one by one.

## See the payments

Open the invoice page: click the number of the invoice in the list. Under the invoice, “Payments” lists each payment with its “Date”, “Amount”, the way it was paid (“Via”) and its “Description”.

“Current balance” shows what is still due, or “Paid in full”. Your client sees the same list on the invoice page you send them.

## Change or delete a payment

1. On the invoice page, click the actions button (**⋮**) on the line of the payment.
2. Choose “Edit”, or choose “Delete” and confirm.

A deleted payment is added back to what is due.

- Payments made online with Stripe can't be changed or deleted.
- A credit note shows as a payment. To change it, edit or delete the credit note. See [Create a credit note](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/create-a-credit-note).
- A payment linked to a bank transaction can be deleted, not changed. The transaction is then free again.

## A payment locks the invoice

As soon as an invoice has a payment, even a part payment or a credit note, it can't be changed, made void or deleted. The “Edit” button still shows, but Skileo refuses to save the changes.

To change such an invoice, delete its payments first. Then record them again.

## Common questions

### Can I link a payment to a bank transaction?

Yes, with “Match to transaction” in the invoice's menu. It needs “Bank” set to “Write”, and it is part of the “Bank” screens.

### Can I record a payment on a void invoice?

No. Make it active again first, with “Undo void”. See [What invoice statuses mean](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/invoice-statuses).

### The client paid too much. What do I do?

Record the full amount. Skileo warns you, then saves it. The invoice shows “Paid”.

### Who can record payments?

The “Business owner”, and each “Member” with “Invoicing” set to “Write”.
