# How the finances overview works

The finances overview adds up your income and expenses of last year or this year, shows them month by month in a chart, and lists every financial record and payment.

## What the overview shows

Open “Finances” › “Overview” in the menu. The page has three parts:

1. The totals at the top.
2. The “Revenue report”: a chart of the year, month by month.
3. A list of your “Financial records” or your “Recorded payments”. See [Find a financial record or a payment](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/financial-records-and-payments).

## The totals

- “Income”: the total of your sales invoices and other incomes.
- “Income (Paid)”: the payments you received.
- “Expenses”: the total of your purchase invoices and other expenses.
- “Expenses (Paid)”: the payments you made, as recorded in Skileo.
- “Balance”: your income minus your expenses. It is red when it is below zero.

Under each amount, Skileo shows the VAT it includes.

## The revenue report

The chart has one group of bars for each month: “Income amount”, “Received income payments”, “Expenses amount” and “Recorded expense payments”.

- Choose the year next to the chart: last year or this year. The totals at the top show the same year.
- Choose “Both”, Income or Expense to see one side only. The totals and the “Category” filter of the list follow your choice.

The chart is always shown. When you open the page again, it shows this year and both sides.

## What is counted

- Sales invoices, credit notes, incomes and purchase invoices of the chosen year. For this year, Skileo counts up to the end of this month. A credit note is taken off the total it belongs to.
- Drafts and void records are not counted, and neither are their payments.
- Amounts are shown in your workspace's main currency. Amounts in other currencies are converted at the rate of their date. When Skileo finds no rate, it leaves these amounts out and names their currencies under the totals.

## The overview and the dashboard

The “Dashboard” of “Accounting” is a board of cards, such as “Cash”, “To get paid”, “To pay” and “Overdue”. Each person arranges their own board.

The overview is your full account: every record and every payment, with the totals of the year.

## Common questions

### Why don't I see the totals and the chart?

Your workspace has no financial record yet. They show as soon as you add the first one.

### Why is a purchase invoice missing from the totals?

It is a draft, or it is void. Purchase invoices added with Bulk upload, and the copies of a repeating record, are drafts until you open and save them. See [Upload many purchase invoices at once](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/upload-many-purchase-invoices).

### Can I see an older year?

Not in the totals and the chart: they show last year and this year. To find older records, use the “Reporting period” filter of the list.

### Are quotes counted?

No. Only the invoice you make from a quote is counted.
