# Edit or delete a message

Point at your message and click Edit or Delete. A deleted message is removed for everyone, with its files. Only the person who wrote a message can change it.

## Edit a message

1. Point at your message and click “Edit”.
2. Change the text in the box at the bottom.
3. Press Enter, or click “Save”.

To stop without a change, press Escape.

> **Tip**
> When the box is empty, the up arrow key (↑) edits your last message.

The message then shows “edited”. You can change the text, not the files.

## Delete a message

1. Point at your message and click “Delete”.
2. Confirm with “Delete”.

The message and its files are deleted for everyone in the conversation.

> **Good to know**
> A deleted message does not go to the trash. It cannot be brought back.

## Who can edit or delete a message

Only the person who wrote it. Nobody can edit or delete someone else's message, not even the “Business owner”.

## Common questions

### Why can't I edit a message?

It is not yours, or it is a forwarded message. Forwarded messages can only be deleted.

### What do the others see when I edit a message?

The new text, with “edited” next to it.

### What happens to a reply when the message it quotes is deleted?

The reply stays. Its quote shows “Message deleted”.

### Can I delete a whole chat?

Not a chat between two people. The “Business owner” can delete a channel or a private group. See [Create a channel or a private group](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/channels-and-groups).
