# Create a channel or a private group

In Messages, click + next to Channels. Give it a name. Leave Private group unticked for a channel the whole team sees, or tick it and add the people of the group.

## Create a channel or a group

1. Open “Messages” in the menu.
2. Click **+** next to “Channels”: “New channel or group”.
3. Type a “Name”: 2 to 32 lowercase letters a–z, digits, hyphens (-) or underscores (\_).
4. If you want, type a “Topic”: one line about what it is for.
5. For a private group, tick “Private group (only the people you add see it)” and choose the “Members”.
6. Click “Create”.

Two channels cannot have the same name.

## Channel or group?

- A channel is for the whole team. Every “Business owner” and every “Member” sees it, also the people who join the team later. Its name starts with **#**.
- A private group is only for its members. Its name has a lock before it.

Employees and candidates never see channels or groups.

## Add or remove people in a group

1. Open the group.
2. Click “Members”: the people button at the top right.
3. To add someone, choose them in “Add someone” and click “Add”.
4. To remove someone, click the cross (**×**) next to their name.

Every member of the group can add and remove people. Members are always people of the team: the “Business owner” or a “Member”.

## Leave a group

1. Click “Members”.
2. Click “Leave group” and confirm.

You no longer see the group, unless someone adds you again.

## Delete a channel or a group

Only the “Business owner” can delete a channel, or a group they are a member of.

1. Open the channel or the group.
2. Click “More actions” (**⋮**) at the top right.
3. Choose “Delete channel” or “Delete group”.
4. Skileo tells you how many messages and files it holds. Click “Yes, delete it!”

> **Good to know**
> Every message and file in it is deleted for everyone. It does not go to the trash and cannot be undone.


## Common questions

### Can I rename a channel or change its topic?

No. The name and the topic are set when the channel is created.

### Can I leave a channel?

No. A channel is for the whole team. Only private groups can be left.

### Who can delete a channel?

Only the “Business owner”. A “Member” does not see “Delete channel”.
