# Add an income that is not a sales invoice

In the finances overview, click Add new, then Add income. Choose a category, the customer and the amounts, then click Create income. To add many at once, import a CSV file.

## When to add an income

Use an income for money you receive without sending a sales invoice, for example interest, rent or a refund. To bill a client, create a sales invoice instead. See [Create a sales invoice](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/create-a-sales-invoice).

An income counts in the totals of the finances overview and shows in its “Financial records” list. It is not in “Sales invoices”.

## Add the income

1. Open “Finances” › “Overview” in the menu.
2. Click “Add new” and choose “Add income”.
3. Fill in the sections below. Fields with a star are required.
4. Click “Create income”.

## “The income”

- “Category”: the kind of income. You set the categories in “Settings”, “Payment categories”. The categories of sales invoices and credit notes are not in this list. “Exempt from taxes” shows whether the category is exempt from taxes.
- “Document number”: the number of the receipt or statement, if it has one.
- “Currency” and “Document date”.
- “Due date”: when you expect the money, if you know it.

## “The customer”

Choose who the money comes from in the “Customer” list. To add a new contact, click the plus button next to the list.

## “Items”

Add one line for each thing the income is for: “Item description”, “Unit price”, “Qty” and “VAT (%)”. When you type the description, Skileo suggests the items you saved in “Settings”, “Invoice items”. A saved item fills in its price and VAT.

Click “Add more” to add a line. The totals show under the lines.

## “Payment”

Choose the “Payment method”. For a bank payment, choose the “Bank account”: Skileo fills in the “Bank payment details”.

This says how the income is paid. It doesn't record a payment: the income stays unpaid until you record one. In the “Financial records” list, click **⋮** on its line and choose “Record payment”.

## “Repeat” and “More options”

- “Repeat”: for an income you receive on a schedule. See [Make an expense or an income repeat](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/repeat-an-expense).
- “More options”: an “Internal note” for your team, and “Additional documents”: images or PDFs, up to 5 MB each.

## Import incomes or expenses from a CSV file

1. In the finances overview, click “Add new” and choose “Import”.
2. Under “Select document type”, choose “Income” or “Expense”.
3. Choose your CSV file. An Excel or Numbers file must first be saved as CSV.
4. Click each column title of your file and choose the field it fills. The required fields must all be matched.
5. Click “Next”. Skileo checks each row and tells you how many are valid.
6. Click “Import”. Only the valid rows are imported.

The required columns are the date, the number, the contact, the currency, the total amount, the description and the category. The VAT amount, the amount still due and the payment method are optional.

- Each row gives one record with one line.
- Write the dates in the date format you use in Skileo.
- Write each category as it is named in “Payment categories”. A name Skileo doesn't know leaves the record without a category.
- A contact Skileo doesn't know is added to your contacts.
- A row with the same number as a record you already have is skipped.
- Leave the amount still due empty when the record is fully paid. Skileo then records the payment on the record's date. Without this column, every row is imported as paid.

## Common questions

### Can I change an income later?

Yes. In the “Financial records” list, click **⋮** on its line and choose “Edit”. Make your changes and click “Save changes”.

### What happens if I leave the form before saving?

Skileo asks you first. If you leave, what you typed is lost.

### Can I import sales invoices the same way?

Yes, from “Sales invoices”. See [Fill an invoice from a PDF or add many at once](https://www.skileo.com/help/en/add-invoices-from-pdf-or-csv).
